Medal "For the defense of Sevastopol"
The medal was established by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 22, 1942. A partial addition to the Regulations on the medal was made by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 19, 1943. In addition, the description of the medal was amended by Decrees of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 27 and May 3, 1943.
Regulations on the medal.
The medal "For the defense of Sevastopol" is awarded to all participants of the defense of Sevastopol - the Red Army, Navy and NKVD troops, as well as civilians directly involved in the defense. The period of defense of Sevastopol is November 5, 1941 - July 4, 1942.
The awarding of medals is carried out on behalf of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the basis of documents certifying the actual participation in the defense of Sevastopol issued by the commanders of units, the heads of military medical institutions and the corresponding regional and city Soviets of Working People's Deputies.
Delivery is made:
persons who are in the military units of the Red Army, the Navy and NKVD troops, commanders of military units, and persons who left the army and navy - regional, city and district military commissars at the place of residence of the recipients;
persons from the civilian population - participants in the defense of Sevastopol - by the regional and city Soviets of Working People's Deputies at the place of residence of the recipients.
The medal "For the Defense of Sevastopol" is worn on the left side of the chest and in the presence of other medals the USSR is located after the medal "For the Defense of Odessa".
Description of the medal.
The medal "For the defense of Sevastopol" is made of brass and has the form of a regular circle with a diameter of 32 mm.
On the front side of the medal, in a convex circle with a diameter of 22 mm, the chest images of the Red Army man and the Red Fleet are turned to the left. On a 5-mm-wide frame, the ends of two gun barrels and an anchor protruding from under the central circle are depicted. At the top of the frame, on the dashboard is a five-pointed star. On the circumference of the frame there is an inscription "FOR DEFENSE OF SEVASTOPOL".
On the reverse side of the coin is the inscription "FOR OUR SOVIET HERITAGE". Above the inscription are a sickle and a hammer.
All inscriptions and images on the medal are convex.
The medal with the ear and ring is connected to a pentagonal kolodochkoy, covered with a silk moire ribbon of olive color with a longitudinal blue strip in the middle. The width of the tape is 24 mm, the width of the strip is 2 mm.
History of the medal.
The People's Commissariat of Defense of the USSR was the initiator of the establishment of medals for the defense of Odessa, Sevastopol, Leningrad and Stalingrad in October 1942. November 24, 1942 Stalin was instructed to begin developing drawings of these medals.
In the creation of a design drawing medals artists Kabakov, Kongiser and others took part. The author of the approved drawing of the medal became the artist Moskalev N.I.

Originally, it was planned to make a stainless steel medal, however, by Decree of March 27, 1943, brass was approved for the material of the medal.

The medal "For the defense of Sevastopol" could be awarded and periodicals. So, for example, the newspaper "Crimean Pravda" was awarded this medal.
In 1962, about 39,000 awards were awarded to the medal.
As of January 1, 1995, approximately 52,540 people were awarded the Medal for the Defense of Sevastopol.
